This was a school.
Now it’s a sauna.
What Is BUNA SAUNA
BUNA SAUNA is a renovated school building in Okinawa, now run by the BUNAGAYA group as a sauna, cafe, and rest space.
The hallways are still there. The concrete walls are still there. The bones of the building are exactly what you’d expect from a Japanese school — except now, one of the classrooms is a sauna, there’s a hammock in the corner, and the ocean is a short walk away.
It’s the kind of place that only makes sense in Okinawa.
What’s Inside
The facility has a sauna, a shop, a cafe counter, a front desk, and guest rooms. The interior keeps the raw feel of the original school — exposed concrete, wooden lattice screens, pendant lights hanging from high ceilings.
A bicycle leans against the wall. A hammock waits near the window.
It doesn’t feel like a spa. It feels like someone made a school beautiful again.
Swim. Sauna. Repeat.
The ocean is right outside. The idea is simple: get in the water, warm up in the sauna, repeat as many times as you want.
In Okinawa, that’s not a bad way to spend a day.
The Short Version
An abandoned school. A sauna. The sea.
Only in Okinawa.
