Every summer in Ishigaki, the drums start.
Most visitors to Ishigaki Island never hear them.
What Hōnen Matsuri Is
Hōnen Matsuri (豊年祭) is a harvest festival. A celebration of the year’s rice crop — praying for abundance, giving thanks for what came in.
It is not a performance. There is no stage, no ticket, no schedule posted in English. It happens because it has always happened. The community organizes it. The community dances it. The community watches it.
The Dance
Taiko drums. Hundreds of dancers. Every village in the Yaeyama Islands has its own version, its own rhythm, its own costumes.
The dancing goes on for hours. Children. Adults. Elderly residents who have been doing this since before tourists started arriving. The drumming doesn’t stop.
When and Where
Hōnen Matsuri takes place in summer — usually July or August — across the Yaeyama Islands. Different villages hold theirs on different days.
The easiest way to find it: ask at your guesthouse or hotel. If you’re in Ishigaki during summer, there is almost certainly a festival happening somewhere nearby.
The Short Version
Taiko drums. Hundreds of dancers. Every village. Every summer.
This is what Ishigaki looks like when it isn’t performing for tourists.
